Cooperation between the Astronomical Society of Tasmania and the University of Tasmania has existed for a long time, especially since many Society members, over the years, have been (or still are) students at the University.

In July 1989, on the invitation of Dr. Bob Watson, the Society started to use the facilities of the then Canopus Hill Observatory, in particular, the 16" telescope. The Society, with the support of the University ran very popular astronomy nights for people of Southern Tasmania at the Canopus Hill Opservatory.

In 2015, the Society’s move to new facilities at the Mount Pleasant Radio Astronomy Observatory was completed and the first joint Society-UTAS Public Open Night was held at this site.
